At School

The Program

Itsuo woke up in the bank and immediately reflected on what a poor decision it was for him to have planned out his whole life nice and neat when he was totally going to die in under three days now. o/` His best friend, Raiden Shindou, then passed him a note, which he read upon exiting the bank. Raiden listed zone A1 as a place to meet, and Itsuo decided almost immediately to go there. First, though, he stopped in the Library to unload and sort through his bags, where he found his assigned weapon, a cat o' nine tails. He soon discovered Raina Yoshizawa, the friend and fellow classmate he had tutored back at Haramichi, hiding under a desk. Raina panicked, but they both soon calmed, sitting in a stunned silence before deciding to stick together. They re-prioritized what was in their bags, and then headed out to leave the Library. Itsuo spotted Miyuki Ishida's bag lying in the corner before they left. Shocked that he had missed her by seconds, he took it with him, vowing to find her later on.

He and Raina then headed out of the city and into the adjoining forest where A1 was located. They stopped in the Monastery to rest, where they listened to the first report and explored the inside of the church a little bit. A few hours passed and they had just decided to leave in a few more hours when Mami Hanasaki approached them with her flashlight, mistaking them for class couple Ryuichi Nakano and Emi Kuribayashi. She mentioned having seen Kinuka Asano earlier and accepted some food before deciding to leave again. She returned but a couple of hours later, admitting that she was scared to be alone.

The three departed after Itsuo popped some anxiety pills, continuing on the path to zone A1. They crossed through the Graveyard as a means of shortcut, but this turned out to be a grave (haha? Get it?!) mistake. Hideaki Yuasa was lurking there, and he immediately shot at the three of them. Itsuo fired back, but Hideaki managed to get a chokehold on Raina, dragging her behind the mausoleum. Two loud shots were heard, and Itsuo and Mami stiffened in fear. Raina then staggered out from behind the wall and dropped to the ground. They rushed to her and Itsuo held her, locating the wound in her ribs first. Mami left for Hideaki's weapon and subsequently finished him off with a step to his throat. She returned to witness Raina's dying moments. Raina asked the two of them to shoot her instead, though, implying in lesser words that Hideaki had raped her months ago in school. Itsuo granted her wish not to die by the boy who had raped her and shot her in the back of the head.

The tragedy now rested between Itsuo and Mami's shoulders, and they progressed in silence. Itsuo eventually told Mami of Raiden's plan for A1. Once they reached A1 itself and Raiden wasn't there, they played some Ad Libs to pass the time and wait for him. Soon, though, they realized that they were being boxed in by the danger zones and were forced to move. They headed straight out, following all of the A zones, and to their luck, found Raiden headed their way- along with Seikou Ishida, Kentaro Fukushima, and Miyuki Ishida. A nerdy reunion ensued, and Itsuo went to sit down with Miyuki. They talked about what had happened to Raina, and Miyuki explained her gunshot wound was caused by Kinuka.

The peace wasn't to last, though. As the six of them discussed Raiden's escape plan, Kentaro, who was already feeling tense, snapped. He began fighting with Raiden, and Miyuki pointed her gun at the both of them. In less than a minute, though, things happened in a quick succession of chaos- Raiden and Ken started shoving, and Ken stumbled backwards into the electric fence. The petrol bomb that was his weapon caught a spark as he was being electrocuted to death, and exploded. Seikou grabbed the first person he saw- Itsuo- and pulled him into one of the firing shelters. They awoke underneath the wreckage, where they discovered that Seikou had sustained severe injuries and Itsuo had been struck on the head, rendering his memory of the explosion itself all but gone. After seeing the charred lump of Ken's body, they made their way out. They moved on and encountered the Hotel, hearing shots. Seikou, weakened, went to hide while Itsuo headed over to investigate. He quickly made the decision to bring Raina's submachine gun with him.

He came into a scene of chaos involving Kinuka Asano, Yoko Shimzuki, Sakura Tsumatsu, Emi Kuribayashi, Suzuka Otomo, and Satoru Ishigaki. Itsuo shot both Kinuka and Yoko, the assailants, killing the latter and injuring the former. He tackled Kinuka before she could fire back, and they argued before her crying act softened him up a little bit. He removed the bullet in her arm, disturbed by the mental anguish he thought he saw in her eyes. Seikou then agreed to leave with Kinuka, whom they guessed might calm down somewhat if she had him with her. Itsuo then left to pause over Yoko Shimzuki's body, saying a prayer before seeing Sakura and Suzuka. He gave them both weapons, wishing them luck before the three split.

Itsuo moved on in a state of misery, unable to think of much else but Miyuki with the dwindling number of students left. In the rain, he spotted Ryo Ikeuchi, his previous roommate back at school, sitting in front of a puddle. He debated approaching him as a report sounded off, telling of Seikou's death, which racked him with guilt. In a half-mania, Itsuo wondered if he ought to just kill Ryo in his vulnerable position, but at the last second, he changed his mind. They took off together, and for a small while, Ryo's prescence managed to abate the turmoil in Itsuo's head. It soon took over again, though, with Seikou's death turning into a symbol in his mind of something he needed to make up to Miyuki. He vowed to clear a path for the girl, and told himself not to feel sorry for Ryo any longer.

After the next report, Itsuo made his decision. He turned his gun on Ryo after calmly explaining in near-mathmatical turns why he needed to die. Ryo called him a liar, and the two tackled each other, causing Itsuo to drop the gun and it to turn into a full-out fight on top of the clock tower. Itsuo managed to gain the upper hand and pointed the submachine gun at Ryo, firing quickly. Ryo took several shots in the stomach and flew backwards. Ryo fell, and, almost in time with this, Itsuo heard a girl's voice calling. He looked down to see Miyuki Ishida standing below the clock tower. Shocked, he obeyed Ryo's command that he leave him to die alone and rushed down to meet her.

Seeing Miyuki brought a new clarity to him and he realized that if he wasn't going to commit suicide, he'd deserve to die anyway. He attempted to explain to her that he was trying to help her, but she didn't take it very well. The topic of Seikou then approached, and Itsuo wondered if he should tell her the truth. He told her a half-truth, saying that Kinuka had knocked him out and forcibly taken the boy. Miyuki was frustrated and furious with him, blurting out each and every one of the kills she had achieved so far. Unsure of what to do next, they reached an impasse with each other, but just then, Raiden Shindou showed up.

Both were unaware of the trials that Itsuo's best friend had been through since the incident with the electric fence, and Raiden was tense. The conversation quickly escalated into a high-tension pointing of fingers and whipping of words. Raiden presented a weapon that Itsuo was far from prepared for: he had the letters that Sakura Tsumatsu had written to be discovered upon her death, and they revealed the truth of what had happened with Seikou and Kinuka. Itsuo tried to explain things away, but it was useless. Miyuki turned her gun on him as well, giving Raiden the upper hand. He tackled Itsuo, and the two of them went flying off the side of the hill, punching and kicking and trying to kill the other.

A loosening of grip was all it took for Raiden to escape Itsuo's hold, though, and he stood up quickly. Itsuo realized what was about to happen seconds before it did, and he screamed out, trying to say one last thing before it was over:

"Wait! You need t--"

Raiden kicked him swiftly in the neck, snapping it and killing him instantly.

Trivia

  • Tutor to Raina Yoshizawa
  • Itsuo's study habits were exaggerated so much in flashbacks- not just Gabrielle's- that they became somewhat of an injoke, making it look like it was all he ever did.
  • Often seen wearing sweater vests. Nobody ever bothered to tell him how uncool they were.
